Becoming a fully devoted follower of Christ is a life long process of spiritual growth.  The purpose of this  Spiritual Life Inventory (SLI) is to help you assess where you are now in your spiritual journey and map out some proactive steps forward.  Based on your responses to the following 36 statements, you will then be assisted to identify some next steps you can take to keep moving ahead toward spiritual maturity.  Honest responses will be most valuable to you in doing this self-assessment.

I make my day to day choices with the full conviction that there is a God who can be known, who created all things, and who is active in bringing about his purposes for humanity. *

I live my life with an observable concern for the best interests of others and not just for my own interests. *

I gather weekly with others to worship God and celebrate his goodness and seek to live my whole life in a way that is pleasing to God. *

The fact that all people matter to God means that they also matter to me and this directs the way I view and act towards them whether they are friends, family, strangers, or enemies. *

I actively seek to understand another person's real need in order to serve them in the right way and at the right time before I take action to help them. *

I regularly act on Jesus' last instructions to introduce others to him and help them become his fully devoted followers. *

I organize my priorities, life choices, and behavior around the conviction that the best life a person can live comes from a vital and growing relationship with God. *

I live my life in such a way that what is seen in my outward behavior is consistent with who I really am at the heart of my being. *

I read the Bible daily with the determination to obey its instruction in all my decision making and behavior. *

I make a point of listening to and understanding each person's story before I tell my own story. *

I consistently make decisions and act out of the conviction that serving others for their good is one of the highest values in my life. *

I demonstrate, by the way I live, that I believe that true greatness is not found in achievement, affluence, or getting attention, but in loving God and serving others. *

I recognize that Jesus Christ has done everything necessary for my sin to be forgiven and I am currently experiencing the fullness of life that he promised for this life and forever. *

I make it my highest priority in life to please God in all I think, say, and do. *

I have made room in my life to include others, both within the Christian community and in the larger community where I live and work. *

I make a point of doing what is best for others even when it costs me something to do so. *

I regularly take the initiative to meet, get to know, and serve others, and not just focus on myself and my own interests. *

I have taken responsibility to be a visible, positive example and influence for Jesus Christ in the places where I live and work, regardless of the consequences. *

I rely on what I read in the Bible as God's own story helping me understand who he is, what he is doing in the lives of people and the world, and revealing his purposes for creation. *

I consistently give my best effort to everything I undertake and seek to live life with passionate engagement. *

I am active in pursuing relationships with others who can show me how to follow Jesus Christ and support me in becoming like him. *

I take an active interest in seeking to know, understand, and serve whoever God brings into my sphere of influence, and avoid treating them as an inconvenience or an interruption. *

I strive to treat everyone I meet with the understanding that all people are created in God's image and worthy of dignity, respect, and honor. *

I consistently and intentionally find ways to use my time, talent, and finances to make a difference for good of others and to advance Jesus' mission in the world. *

I acknowledge Jesus Christ as the director of my life and seek to wholeheartedly follow his teaching and example, whatever it costs, wherever it takes me. *

I actively seek to engage in relationships with others that allow me to make a contribution to goals of the groups or teams I am a part of. *

I have established a regular pattern of communicating with God by praying both privately and with others. *

I recognize I need others to become the best I can be and I actively and intentionally build relationships where I can love others and be loved by them. *

I willingly love and serve others in practical ways even when they will not or cannot treat me in the same way. *

I persevere in following Jesus knowing the difficulties I face in life will require patience, persistence, and courage that only he can provide. *

I daily live my life with my highest purpose being to love God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love others as I love myself. *

I live my life with an honest recognition of my strengths and weaknesses and do not judge or compare myself with others in order to make myself look better or more important. *

I have made it my life's priority to care for my soul's health and have established daily, weekly, and yearly habits to enable me to connect with God and give him room to enable me to become like Jesus. *

I regularly build people up through the words I speak by telling the truth in love and always with their best interests in mind. *

I typically treat everyone in need who God brings into my sphere of influence as a neighbor whom I have the opportunity to serve and who is worthy of my best effort. *

I make my life decisions based on the conviction that the best way to live a great life and to invest my focus and energy is to spend it in loving and serving God and others. *

Unfamiliar With Christ

If your score on the Spiritual Life Inventory falls in this range, then the following is probably true in your life regarding spiritual things . . .

"God is not really a significant factor in my daily life. I know little or nothing about Jesus Christ. I have not read the Bible or really had an inclination to do so. I have never or almost never been to church. If I pray, it is in an emergency and I am not sure it makes any difference. I am pretty sure that whatever someone believes is good as long as they are sincere and don’t infringe on the rights of others. This life is all there is. It is up to me to make the most of it. I set my priorities base on my experience, reason, and intuition. I believe hard work and diligence is the best way to get ahead.   Success in life is having a job I enjoy and making enough of an income to enjoy the things that matter to me. I am responsible to look after my own family and friends. I try to be a decent person and make a deliberate effort not to hurt others. If I have time, energy, and resources, I may also try to help others not related to me."

If the description above accurately describes you and you would like to take some steps forward in your spiritual journey, let us make the following suggestions . . .

Exploring Christ

If your score on the Spiritual Life Inventory falls in this range, then the following is probably true in your life regarding spiritual things . . .

"I believe there is a God out there somewhere. I have heard about Jesus Christ, but don’t really understand what he was all about.   I have heard or read the Bible a bit but find it all very confusing and hard to understand.  I occasionally attend church with friends or on special occasions.  I do pray when I’m stuck.  I believe there some kind of standard of right and wrong, even though many may disagree about what this means. I don’t really understand what it means to follow him, but I am interested.  I feel that there has to be more to life than just existing, working, and dying.  I set my priorities according to what I feel is the best for my family, myself, my friends, and my associates.  i believe that with  hard work and diligence, and a few breaks, I can keep moving forward.  Success in life is having good relationships, appreciation the world in which I live, having a job I can pour myself into, and enough resources to get by.  I want my life to count for something; for the world to be a better place because I have made a contribution. My friends and family are important to me.  I try to be a good employee or boss where I work and treat people decently.  I believe I should try and help others in need when I have opportunity and ability to do so."

Beginning In Christ

If your score on the Spiritual Life Inventory falls in this range, then the following is probably true in your life regarding spiritual things . . .

"I have made a decision to follow Christ and I want to learn what this means for the way I live my life.  There is a lot I don’t know and don’t quite understand, but I want to know how to get closer to God and grow in healthy relationships with others.  I am reading the Bible and praying, but not as consistently as I would like to.  I attend church when I can.  I have helped out in a couple of areas of the church’s activities or at least want to.  I have a lot of questions but feel I am in the right place to pursue the answers. I believe that God has a purpose for my life.  I take personal responsibility for my life decisions and try to make the best ones I can.   I want to live my life in a way that pleases God and benefits others.  My priorities are based on what I have learned from life and now, increasingly, from the Bible.  I am trying to make more and more good decisions with God’s help.  I want to make a moral difference where I work and play through living a life of integrity and character.  I realize I need others to help me grow spiritually and am willing to get together with others to explore how to follow Jesus better."

Growing In Christ

If your score on the Spiritual Life Inventory fell in this range, then the following is probably true in your life regarding spiritual things . . .

"I am committed to following Jesus and my relationship with God is grounded and growing.  I have established regular habits of participating in worship, reading and reflecting on the Bible and prayer.   I occasionally feel a strong sense God’s presence in these moments.   More and more, the Bible’s teaching is shaping my view of the world and how I live my life in it.  I feel God has a mission for my life for which I must apply my time, talent, and resources. I  am actively pursuing God’s will for my life, although there are still times when I find it hard not to take matters into my own hands in the ever day of life, work, and relationships.  There is much of my life over which Jesus is my leader, but there are still some areas I find hard to let out of my control. Friends have become very important to me, especially those who encourage and help me to grow spiritually.  I enjoy larger groups, but often benefit most in a group of two or three others with whom I can safely be myself and discuss the real issues of our lives.  I actively seek out ways to serve others both inside the church and/or beyond."
